Since 1993, Transeuropéennes has developed in the European Union, in the Mediterranean area and the Balkans an informal network of actors from the cultural, academic and non-governmental sectors (both individuals and structures) which, setting themselves apart from the discourse of closed identities, are desirous to set up a lasting partnership and to promote common references.
Aiming both at creating an informal Euro-Mediterranean space for cooperation and interaction and at developing and reinforcing innovative networks involved in the ongoing democratisation processes in the Balkans, Transeuropéennes draws upon a double network :
- Several hundreds of professors, researchers, NGO activists, writers, artists, journalists, local representatives… who take part in Transeuropéennes' activities at various levels: recruitment of students for the summer universities and workshop participants, moderation of workshops and trainings, contribution to the programmes' contents through their involvement in Transeuropéennes' scientific committees, co-organisation of events, contributions to the journal, etc.
- some 700 young opinion shapers, former participants in Transeuropéennes summer university programmes, who are encouraged to develop networking activities aimed at fighting ideologies of hatred and violence, struggling against the manipulation of culture and knowledge for political purposes, and to foster the democratising of academic life (i.e. organisation of meetings, forums of discussion, etc.).
