Within the framework of the second European Social Forum, to be held between 12th and 15th November 2003 in Saint-Denis near Paris, Transeuropéennes organises a seminar on “Nationalism and Patriarchy” in partnership with Les Pénélopes.

Intentions
In a context where identity-based behaviours, nationalisms and populisms are developing, from eastern to western Europe, the analysis of patriarchy and of the importance of community-based pressures seems indispensable. Fascist and ethno-nationalist discourses, aiming at essentialise the belonging to a territory, inevitably create discriminations towards women and feminist movements. Transversally, the feminist struggle against patriarchy, nationalism and colonialism therefore needs to bear in mind that there are only complex structures, being altogether specific and local, universal and global. The objective is thus to examine the relationship between these “-isms” and the contemporary feminist point of view. The speakers, academics and activists, will bring their analyses and testimonies.
